Vintage Evening Gowns

Black Ribbon-work Late 1950’s Evening Gown

This stunning and exceptional design piece was done by Kleshie Bellman, a British designer of the period. She was born Kleshie Warshawski in 1896 in London to a family of Polish Jewish tailors. The dress is a complex and highly detailed design of black ribbon-work on a nude mesh background over a nude satin lining. The mesh netting has several small areas of holes, mainly on the sleeves. The body for the most part is solid and sound, save for one area at the bottom back hem, shown in the photograph. That said, none of this detracts from the dress in any way, as they cannot be seen. I would also venture to say that it would be very easy to clean up and patch these areas inside with fresh netting. The lining shows the individual stitching and placement of the Rosettes around the body of the dress. The sleeves bell out at the wrists and while the style remains column shaped, it flares out to a slight trumpet hem and a back zip, original to the piece.
